POSCO Chemical celebrates the 50th anniversary and expresses determination to become a top-tier global payer in chemicals and secondary cells

POSCO Chemical celebrated the arrival of the milestone year, the Golden Jubilee. To commemorate the 50 years of service, POSCO Chemical held an event to share the company’s accomplishments and demonstrate its determination to rise to the top-tier in the global chemical and secondary cell business, in line with the company’s vision.
At Pohang headquarters on March 31, 2021, a minimum number of people including the CEO, members of the representative organizations, CEOs from affiliated companies attended the event in compliance with preventive rules against the pandemic. POSCO Chemical executives and employees watched the ceremony via in-house broadcasting.
POSCO Chemical awarded the POSCO Chemical Employee of the Year to select employees who had made significant contribution to the company and demonstrated exceptional performance. The commemorative wall in the headquarters lobby revealed in the unveiling ceremony displayed photos of 1,800 employees who had achieved noticeable results in the past 50 years alongside the company CI.
The slogan engraved on the wall, “50 years of POSCO Chemical, making the future together” was chosen through an employee contest, asserting that employees are the protagonists who move the company forward based on the accumulation of exceptional accomplishments over five decades.
In the congratulatory remarks, POSCO Chemical CEO Min Kyung-zoon said, “We should take pride in the outcomes achieved by confronting to constant challenges of localizing anodes, setting up a foundation for the mass production of cathodes, and the domestic production of needle cokes. Based on the experience of success, let us secure the highest level of competitiveness and make the company last for another 50 years, or even 100 years.”
Three goals were presented in the event as essential tasks that need to be performed to revamp the company into a centurial company: Securing of top-notch technology and quality, continuous development of the team spirit, and embracing the founding philosophy that has contributed to industrial development.
Emphasis was placed on safety as the most important value in realizing the goals, asserting that safety in the workplace is equivalent to the lives of employees and their family members.
POSCO Chemical, a successor to Pohang Industrial Furnace Co., Ltd. founded in 1971, has played a critical role in development of the Korean industry on the basis of its expertise in refractories, the base material for various industries including steel and chemical plants. Ever since its founding, the company has begun the secondary cell business in earnest as its future growth engine, following coal chemical and carbon materials. Today, POSCO Chemical is striving to become a global leader in chemicals and secondary batteries.
