- Annual production capacity of
52,500 tons, supplying batteries for 580,000 electric vehicles... Completion
expected in the first half of 2025
- Solidifying its position as a
leading high-value technology company by mass-producing and supplying NCA
single crystal following the domestic first NCMA single crystal, based on
unparalleled technological expertise
- Representative Director Kim Jun-hyung: "We will
respond seamlessly to the growth of the electric vehicle market, even in
unpredictable business environments."
Following its Pohang site, POSCO FUTURE M has commenced
construction of a high-value-added, high-nickel NCA (Nickel, Cobalt, Aluminum)
cathode material plant in Gwangyang.
The groundbreaking ceremony, held on the 22nd at the Yulchon 1st
Industrial Complex in Jeollanam-do Province, was attended by POSCO FUTURE M Representative Director Kim Jun-hyung and Samsung SDI Vice President Kim Ik-hyeon, among others.
The plant's production capacity is set at 52,500 tons annually,
sufficient to manufacture batteries for approximately 580,000 electric vehicles
(60kWh each), with the entire output being supplied to Samsung SDI.
High-nickel NCA cathode materials are in increasing demand due to
their high energy density and output, aligning with the trend toward
high-performance electric vehicles. POSCO FUTURE M began producing high-nickel
NCA cathode materials in some lines of the Gwangyang plant since April last
year. With the dedicated plants in Pohang and Gwangyang completed by the end of
this year and the first half of next year, respectively, the company can
produce 82,500 tons of high-value-added, high-nickel NCA cathode materials
annually.
Notably, the NCA cathode material exclusive plants in Pohang and
Gwangyang plan to expand the production of single-crystal cathode materials,
whose demand is surging with the high-performance evolution of electric
vehicles. Single crystal cathode materials enhance the thermal stability and
lifespan of batteries by combining the raw materials into a single particle
structure, requiring advanced technology in the manufacturing process.
Following its first domestic mass production of NCMA single crystal cathode
materials in March last year, POSCO FUTURE M is set to further solidify its
position as a leading company in high-value technology by establishing a mass
production and supply system for NCA single crystal cathode materials.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, Representative Director Kim Jun-hyung emphasized, "Despite the unpredictable business environment, we will expand our production system for NCA cathode materials, a high-value-added product, and respond flawlessly to the growth of the electric vehicle market," and stated, "We aim to leap forward as a global top-tier battery material company and pave the future of POSCO Group's eco-friendly energy material business."
